How do we organize an awkward closet?

We have a closet the length of an entire wall. It is only about 2 1/2 feet deep, 12 feet long and there is a 6 foot opening/door. There’s space but it’s very small and thin. And the space behind the wall is difficult to get to. Any ideas on how we can make the most of this awkward space?

I am a big user of closet storage systems. I can’t imagine what my sons’ closets would look like without them, not to mention my own. I have a similar closet you yours by having space behind walls that is hard to get to. I put two wire shelves the entire length of the closet high and low enough to hang shirts and folded pants. Then in the space behind the walls, I put two more shelves in between the other shelves. I put extra blankets and pillows way in the corners and stack my sweaters in front of them. To get to the blankets, I do have to move the sweaters, but that’s not too often.
Use the hard to reach areas for anything you don’t use very often but do want to keep for whatever reason:
out of season clothing
sentimental garments like wedding dress
any formal garments you must keep and need but not often like evening gowns, tux
costumes
(not clothing)
out of season linens
holiday stuff
storage for generic hostess or housewarming gifts that you pick up when you see them
hiding place for gifts that you have bought for someone in the house
guest stuff
use for safekeeping of guns, valuables, if it is fireproof you can use it for your family documents
You also might be able to use the space for things you need more often, if you put them in containers on wheels, or hang on rolling garment racks.
Don’t be concerned with filling the space unless you need more storage throughout the house, in which case it can be handy for storing things from any other room.
